I have a quite extensive background when it comes to mechanical and automotive repair. I have to say my sons experience with Mavis was absolutely the worst I have ever witnessed in any dealings with any company, ever. My son is also mechanically inclined; he knows all the details about his car and does his own work with my help. Together we replaced the struts and breaks on his car without issue. Between us we have purchase 10 tires from Mavis in Niskayuna NY during the past year. The trouble started on March 13 2012 when he brought the car in to have the tires rotated. Yesterday he decided to replace his brake rotors and drums and found that all the lugs were over torqued and 3 of the lugs broke off easily using the standard Honda tool when trying to remove them. We took off each lug nut and found metal filings in each as well as damaged threads on the studs and in the nuts. We had these parts off two times recently without issue prior to the tire rotation at Mavis and there was no sign of this damage and the lugs came off with ease. It seems obvious that this damage was caused by over torqueing possibly by using a faulty impact driver or mechanic error.

We left the car at Mavis yesterday and I spoke to the Manager who tried to dismiss any wrong doing on their part by telling me it happens all the time. Perhaps that is the case if Mavis was the last one to work on the car but it has never happened to me in my 30 years of personal work on my vehicles and I have owned over 20 . I have never owned a new car and most of the vehicles I have owned and worked on were purchased with at least 100,000 miles on them. Anyone who has any experience in auto work knows that to have 3 lug nuts break off at once when the wheels were removed a week prior has nothing to do with any of the excuses he tried to sell me. He agreed to replace the broken ones as a "good" faith gesture but not the rest. I tried to tell him that metal filings came out of all the lug nuts and the studs were fatigued due to excess torque and could fail causing vehicle and personal injury. He wasn't interested in making things right and treated me with hostility.

At this point I called the corporate headquarters and talked to a customer "representative". This man gave me a very similar song and dance. I told him I was going to file a complaint with the state Attorney general's office and as much as dared me to. I also told him that I was going to talk to his supervisors and they had to make this right as a safety issue. He told me the company would file a harassment charge if I called back.

This is not just a problem at one Mavis Discount Tire Location. Corporate headquarters had no interest in my sons safety either. I guess I should have known that would be the result when the branch manager pointed at the corporate phone number and acted like he was sure they would back him up.

When my son picked up the car they gave him no written or verbal record of what was done. I am wondering if that is legal in its self. I do know the replaced the studs on one side because the ground them off to the spindle causing damage to the spindle in the process .

I cannot believe the owner of this company would put the safety of a young man at risk and loose two good customers in order to save face and a few dollars but since I have been threatened by the customer "service" rep I don't dare try to contact him or anyone at the company.

My son has ordered new parts at his own expense and we plan on replacing them together.

I encourage anyone who is willing to paste this on your FB wall or use it any way you desire to get the word out and protect your friends and family . Remember this is not just a problem at one Mavis Discount Tire Location. It sure looks like corporate headquarters is on board too.

Thank you

I too have had a similair experience with Mavis in Niskyuna and have now been banned from ever returning to their stores, ever! Like I would!

They put myself, my husband, my 9 year old and my 8 month old son at risk. It all started 6 months ago when I brought a vehicle to the lower state st store for brake lines and an alignment. In the end they replaced the ball joint and left the pin out causing excessive play in the steering and that was only discovered after I demanded to take it to a different location (Niskyuna) and they confirmed that was the problem. Fast forward to a few days ago.

I figured Niskyuna had done the right thing so I, shame on me, once again brought a vehicle to them. This time for rear rotors and shoes and an alignment. After the alignment we noticed shaking in the steering and pulling to the left. We went back and I questioned them as to whether they had really checked all the suspension parts.

I think it offended him that a woman 1st off, knew about cars and secondly had the gall to question him. He ofcourse said they did and then wrote down on an invoice what he felt it could be, an inner tierod or the rack and pinion. I then took it to an independent mechanic and ended having to replace the driver side axle and lower ball joint and the passenger side outer tie rod, all parts that they are mandated to check BEFORE an alignment. After the work was performed we took it back and asked the manager how this was possible if the tech had really checked.

So, he pulled the tech aside and all the tech could say was that he didnt know! I immediatley called customer service and during the initial call he was appologetic and said he would investigate. However the 2nd call is when I was treated EXACTLY the same way. Except that the regional manager sent me to pick up the alignment refund and had the store manager tell me that I was banned from ever going to another Mavis tire store, anywhere, ever again.

The regional managers only concern was that I had also complained 6 months ago and the that too had ended up being their fault!! I checked and found out they are not memebers of the BBB but there has to be something I can do!!! They endangered the welfare of my children! PLEASE help!!

Any suggestions other not going there again, obviously....

would be greatlt appreciated. Thank you,
